Difficult situation in Myanmar

In the night from Sunday to Monday, the military took control of the government in Myanmar. In a televised address on Monday morning, the military announced the removal of the civilian government from power and the declaration of a one-year state of emergency. The country's current president, Win Myint, as well as other high-ranked politicians, such as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, were placed under house arrest.

In 2020, Horyzon supported the project "Vocational Training for Disadvantaged Youth" of the YMCA Myanmar. According to our latest information on the ground, the situation is tense and unsafe, but so far there has been no violence or casualties. The project participants and the programme staff are safe and well. However, certain activities had to be paused due to the situation. We remain in close contact with the YMCA Myanmar, which is constantly analysing the situation.
