Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Despite its global economic relevance in the textile industry, about a third of the population lives below the poverty line. There is a lack of running water, hygiene awareness, organised medical care and a good quality education system. Almost every second person can neither read nor write. In addition, two thirds of children under the age of five are malnourished and around 40% of people do not have a toilet.
