Horyzon is now active in Togo, supporting young people who have come into conflict with the law or are at risk of doing so. The juvenile justice system in Togo is overburdened, presenting significant challenges: court proceedings often take far too long, leading to young people spending over a year in prison for minor offenses or awaiting trial without being formally charged. Additionally, there is no state-supported reintegration program after release, increasing the risk of recidivism among these youths.

Horyzon’s new project, "Doin' it Right," addresses these issues by offering comprehensive psychosocial, legal, and social support to affected youths, ensuring they are not left alone, either physically or mentally. The project also prepares incarcerated youths and their families for release, aiming to facilitate successful reintegration into everyday life—both socially and in school or work environments. Through targeted discussions, thematic workshops, and individualized support, the resilience of these youths can be strengthened, reducing the risk of recidivism.

The project is implemented on the ground by Horyzon’s partner organization, YMCA Togo. With over a decade of experience working with young people who have come into conflict with the law, YMCA Togo is currently the only civil society organization operating in all of the country’s prisons.
