A safe place for girls and young women
Haiti has been struggling with numerous challenges for years, severely affecting the lives of its population. Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods occur repeatedly, a weak healthcare system and a lack of medical professionals exacerbate diseases, and food shortages dominate the daily lives of Haitians. The island nation's political instability and ongoing gang violence further worsen an already difficult situation.
Amid all these crises, the youth center run by Horyzon offers young women and girls protection and support. In the center's safe spaces, they can meet and interact; younger girls can play together or engage in creative activities—things often impossible at home or on Haiti's streets. When needed, they receive tutoring or can catch up on school material, especially when schools are frequently closed due to security concerns. Additionally, the center offers training programs for young women up to 35 years old. These courses empower them in areas such as law, finance, and health, providing them with the confidence and knowledge needed to establish themselves in the workforce.
The goal of these programs at the youth center is to enable girls and young women in Haiti to take on active roles within their families and communities. They are encouraged to serve as role models for their peers and future generations, contributing to strengthening women's place in Haitian society. Close collaboration with parents, partners, teachers, and other authorities is also essential to sustainably improve the position of women in the long term.
