"EmpowHER"
strong women, strong communities
As a former kingdom, Nepal is known for its cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. However, alongside its rich traditions and customs, there exists a relatively rigid social order that disadvantages and excludes certain groups. Women, in particular, are often affected by this, as some traditions contradict women’s rights, such as discrimination during menstruation or arranged child marriages. Girls often have access to fewer educational opportunities than boys and are less able to participate in public life. Over generations, this has created a cycle of discrimination against women.
To counteract this problem, young Nepali women receive support in the Horyzon project "EmpowHER". The project aims to empower women by strengthening their sense of self-worth and role in society. Participants can attend five-day courses on topics such as gender equality, family planning, finances, and women’s rights. Afterward, they pass on their knowledge to other women in their community. These course participants serve as multipliers and point-of-contact individuals who can listen to and support other women with questions and problems in their lives. In regular group meetings, guided by mentors, the women can exchange ideas and learn from each other. Additionally, half-day workshops on various health topics are offered to people of all genders and ages. The project reaches women across different generations and life situations. They can gain knowledge from the courses and later share it with other women in their environment. In the long run, this will help to change discriminatory behaviors in society and empower women in Nepal in their rights.
