"Reintegration program"
A perspective for young people with disabilities
The ongoing and repeatedly escalating violence in Palestine has led to a catastrophic humanitarian situation, particularly in the Gaza region. In the West Bank, where Horyzon operates, the situation also continues to deteriorate. Violence in the form of military operations and armed clashes has become a part of daily life for the Palestinian population. Despite these challenges, most activities within the "Reintegration Program" can still be carried out.
Due to the war in the Middle East, which has displaced many people, the need for urgent support is particularly high. Since the outbreak of the war in autumn 2023, the priority of the Horyzon project has been on psychological first aid. In regular group therapy sessions, refugees from Gaza, as well as people from the West Bank, can talk about their experiences and receive support in coping with their psychological burdens. They learn coping strategies, and individual sessions help them navigate their difficult daily lives. In the long term, the aim is to address trauma as well, but this remains a challenge due to the ongoing war and pervasive violence. Because of the high demand and the difficulty for professionals to reach various locations within the West Bank, most therapy sessions are conducted online.
Young people with physical disabilities also continue to receive support through the "Reintegration Program." They are provided with financial assistance if they need medical treatments or aids such as wheelchairs or crutches. A significant part of the program focuses on working with the families of the affected youth. Since the impacts of the conflict affect everyone, family members play a crucial role. Within the family, they can provide the necessary support to improve the physical and mental health of those affected.
By helping young people process their experiences of violence and teaching them to resolve conflicts through communication rather than violence, the project also contributes to peacebuilding efforts.
