Conclusion of Horyzon support in South Sudan
Horyzon concluded its support for the "My Body, My Right, My Future" project in South Sudan at the end of 2022. Over the three years, the project achieved significant outcomes: young women received education on sexual and reproductive health and also gained access to psychosocial support. Thanks to numerous donations, the project contributed to reducing teenage pregnancies and sexual violence against young girls and women.
From the start in early 2020, Horyzon knew the project would be challenging due to South Sudan’s tense political climate and the difficulties in communication with the local project partner, YWCA South Sudan. Nevertheless, Horyzon chose to pursue the project, recognizing the urgent need for youth support in the crisis-stricken country. However, over the three-year period, misunderstandings and negative developments arose in the partnership and communication with YWCA South Sudan. Additionally, the pandemic prevented on-site visits and personal contact, further complicating matters. The necessary clear structures and processes for the project did not develop as expected. After thorough consideration, Horyzon decided that continued collaboration with the partner organization—and thus the successful continuation of the project—was not feasible. The three-year contract expired at the end of 2022 and was not renewed.
Horyzon remains deeply concerned about the fate of South Sudanese youth. Many of them continue to flee to neighboring Uganda, where Horyzon is involved in the "Hope Beyond Borders" project for these very people.
